2. Itachi Uchiha’s Mission as an Anbu Member

After Itachi was officially chosen as an Anbu member, Danzo invited him to his residence. Danzo praised Itachi’s father, Uchiha Fugaku, for being the most intelligent police chief in history.

Danzo then discussed the Uchiha clan’s territory, which was located on the outskirts of the village and governed independently. This situation made it difficult for Konoha’s administration to intervene in the Uchiha clan’s affairs. As a result, Danzo assigned Itachi as a spy for Konoha to report all activities of the Uchiha clan.

During an Uchiha clan meeting, Fugaku, as the head of the clan, informed the members that Itachi had become an Anbu member. Fugaku highlighted the benefits for the Uchiha clan since Itachi would be close to the Hokage and Konoha’s leadership. Therefore, Itachi could relay valuable information to Fugaku and the clan.

Fugaku instructed Itachi to report any information from Konoha to the clan members present at the meeting. Sitting next to Shisui, Itachi told his father that he was still new to the Anbu and did not yet have much information to share.

However, Itachi was aware of the differing opinions among Konoha’s leaders regarding the decision to relocate the Uchiha clan. Fugaku was pleased to hear this from Itachi, believing that Konoha’s leadership still intended to involve the Uchiha clan in the village’s future. This gave the Uchiha members renewed hope in Konoha, inspiring them to cheer in response to Fugaku’s speech.

One day, while on duty with his Anbu captain, Kakashi, the latter informed Itachi that Konoha’s leaders suspected the Uchiha clan of orchestrating the Kyubi incident. Kakashi then took Itachi to a surveillance station where many Anbu agents took turns monitoring the Uchiha clan’s activities around the clock using binoculars.

One of the Anbu informed Itachi that this surveillance post was not the only one—there were several other monitoring stations. Kakashi explained that Anbu’s dirty work was not limited to assassinations but also involved tasks like the one Itachi was assigned—monitoring his own clan every day. Kakashi even offered to take Itachi’s place if the mission proved too burdensome for him.

However, for Itachi, a mission was a mission. He didn’t mind having to keep watch over his own friends and family. Itachi also informed Kakashi that the Uchiha clan was already aware that they had been under suspicion and surveillance for some time.
