Watch Blue Lock Episode 03 Season 1
1. The First Blue Lock Selection Begins
Ego commenced the first Blue Lock selection, involving 55 participants in Building 5, divided into five teams. The rules stated that each group comprised five teams that would compete against one another, but only the teams finishing in 1st and 2nd place in the standings would advance to the second Blue Lock selection.
To determine the group standings, a point system was used based on match results. A win awarded three points (3 points), a draw awarded one point (1 point), and a loss awarded no points (0 points).
As a result, three teams would be eliminated because they failed to reach the 1st or 2nd position. Participants who were eliminated from Blue Lock would never again have the chance to play for Japan’s national team. However, there was one exceptional rule: the top scorer from the three eliminated teams would still be eligible to advance to the second Blue Lock selection.
If there were two top scorer candidates with the same number of goals in one team, Blue Lock would consider Fair Play Points, choosing the player without yellow or red cards to proceed to the next stage.
Scoring goals for oneself or winning as a team? According to Ego, a striker’s fate would be tested in this first selection. Ego referred to it as a battle to rebuild soccer from scratch.
2. Team Z vs. Team X Preparations
The 11 participants of Team Z were confused about determining their playing positions since all Blue Lock participants were strikers. Ultimately, Team Z resorted to a rock-paper-scissors game to decide their positions. As a result, Isagi was chosen to play as a striker.
Koun was appointed as Team Z’s strategist to face Team X, with a strategy that relied on Isagi as the striker. Igaguri doubted Isagi’s abilities due to his low ranking, but Kunigami told Igaguri to stop complaining. Although none of the Team Z players liked playing in positions other than striker, they had no choice but to accept the positions they were assigned after losing the rock-paper-scissors game. Team Z’s principle was that no matter what position they played, the most important thing was victory.
Before the match between Team X and Team Z began, Anri informed both teams that all fouls would be determined by VAR, and the match duration was only 45 minutes.
3. Team Z vs. Team X Match
As the match between Team X and Team Z began, Bachira passed the ball to Isagi, and Isagi sprinted with it. However, Isagi’s advance was halted when he was blocked by three Team X players. Raichi then stole the ball from Isagi, declaring that he wanted to score a goal and didn’t care about the team.
Shortly after, Kunigami took the ball from Raichi, as he also wanted to play selfishly. While Kunigami and Raichi were fighting over the ball, a Team X player managed to steal it from Team Z. However, even within Team X, players fought amongst themselves to gain possession.
Both teams’ players clashed fiercely, fighting for the ball from both their opponents and teammates alike, driven by a single, burning goal—to secure their place in the second Blue Lock selection as the top scorer.
There was no team cooperation in sight; instead, every player became utterly selfish, striving to score a goal on their own. It was as if the objective of the game was to achieve individual glory rather than to win as a united team.
Barou, a player from Team X, shone brightly during the match as he skillfully seized the ball being contested in the crowded fray between Team X and Team Z players. With his extraordinary individual talent, Barou used a heel flick to bypass Isagi’s defense.
He then performed a nutmeg to slip the ball between the legs of two Team Z defenders at once. The result? King Barou scored a stunning goal against Team Z, making the score 1:0 and securing Team X’s lead over Team Z.
Barou also shared his life philosophy with Team Z. To him, the ball wasn’t a friend—it was a round servant that made him shine. On the field, Barou considered himself the king.
